What Landscape Construction Actually Includes

“Landscaping” gets used to mean everything from cutting grass to building a backyard from scratch, which makes it a hard thing to price or plan. Landscape construction is the specific end of it: the design-and-build work that turns a yard into a finished outdoor space. It is more than planting, and understanding what it actually covers helps you brief a contractor properly and know what you are paying for.

Grading and drainage: where every project starts

Before a plant goes in the ground, the question is where the water goes. A yard that pools after rain, or drains back toward the foundation, will undermine a lawn, drown plantings and eventually threaten the house itself. Landscape construction starts by fixing that — re-grading the lot, cutting swales, and installing French drains or channel drains where the slope is the root cause.

It is the least glamorous part of the job and the most important. Get it right and everything planted on top thrives; skip it and no amount of good sod or nice beds will save the result. This is also where landscape and hardscape meet, because a patio and a planting bed have to share the same drainage plan.

The softscape

Softscape is everything that touches soil, and it is the part people picture when they hear “landscaping”:

• Sod and lawns. Fresh-cut sod over properly amended topsoil, laid the same day it leaves the farm. Timing matters in Ottawa — the cooler shoulder seasons establish a new lawn with far less stress than mid-summer.
